Riding my Christmas-new bike home from Jay Ball’s house, I’m hit by a car and break my left arm. I ring in the new year in the hospital. The ether smells like onions. The surgeon sets the bone crooked and my arm has a funny bend to this day. Eight weeks in a cast, four of it in traction.
